Section 1 - Preamble

(1) University Academic Dress Procedures are reviewed and approved from time to time by the University Council.

(2) The persons entitled to academic dress in accordance with this document are:

1. the Chancellor
2. the Deputy Chancellor
3. the Vice-Chancellor
4. other members of Council
5. Degree of Doctor (Other than degree of Doctor of Philosophy)
6. Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
7. Degree of Master
8. Degree of Bachelor, Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma
9. Undergraduate Certificate/Diploma/Advanced Diploma/Associate Degree
10. Certificates I - IV
11. Companion of the University
12. Indigenous Graduates

(3) The academic dress to which a person is entitled is that described in the section referring in its heading to the person, or as the case requires, the person's degree or other award.

Section 2 - Purpose

(4) The purpose of this procedure is to outline the specific Academic Dress that should be worn at University graduation ceremonies and on such occasions as Council determines.

Section 3 - Scope

(5) The intent of this document is to give a clear understanding of which officers, students and alumni of the University are entitled to wear academic dress and what style and colour that will take on formal occasions such as graduation.

Section 4 - Procedure

Chancellor

(6) Gown of charcoal-grey, cool wool with scarlet facings down each side in the front, and a long, pointed collar at the back. The facings and collar are trimmed on the outer-side with a double row of gold and black braid. The sleeves are trimmed around the arm slit with gold braid, and the base of the sleeves is trimmed with a band of scarlet and three bands of gold braid. Above this, the University insignia is embroidered in gold.

(7) Black velvet trencher with gold tassel and edged with gold lace or black velvet bonnet with gold tassel.

Deputy Chancellor

(8) Gown of charcoal-grey, cool wool in the same style as the Chancellor's gown, with plain, charcoal facings down each side in the front, and a long, pointed collar at the back. The facings and collar are trimmed on the outer-side with a double row of scarlet and gold braid. The sleeves are trimmed around the arm slit with gold braid, and the base of the sleeves is trimmed with a band of scarlet with one band of gold. Above this, the University insignia is embroidered in gold.

(9) Black velvet trencher with gold tassel and edged with gold lace or black velvet bonnet with gold tassel.

Vice-Chancellor

(10) Gown of charcoal-grey, cool wool in the same style as the Chancellor's gown, with scarlet facings down each side in the front, and a long, pointed collar at the back. The facings and collar are trimmed on the outer side with a double row of silver and black braid.

(11) Black velvet trencher with silver tassel and edged with silver lace or black velvet bonnet with silver tassel.

Members of Council (Other than Chancellor, Deputy Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor)

(12) The style of academic dress (if any) to which the member is entitled, or black, poly-rayon gown of the Cambridge doctoral pattern with facings of scarlet and white and sleeve linings of scarlet. Sleeves held by white button and cord.

(13) Black trencher with scarlet tassel.

Degree of Doctor (Other than Degree of Doctor of Philosophy)

(14) Festal gown of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge doctoral pattern with 10cm facings and sleeve linings of the relevant award colour specified below. For the award of Doctor of the University, the 10cm facings and sleeve linings will be white.

(15) Black velvet bonnet with silver cord and tassel.

(16) Hood of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge pattern lined with silk of the relevant award colour. For the award of Doctor of the University, the hood will be lined in white, edged with white silk 3cm wide, adjacent to black silk 2cm wide, scarlet silk 3cm wide, then black silk 2cm wide (so that the 3cm white strip is the outer edge of the hood).

Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

(17) Festal gown of claret stuff-cloth of the Cambridge doctoral pattern faced with cream silk 10cm wide.

(18) Black velvet bonnet with cream cord and tassel.

(19) Hood of black cloth of the Cambridge pattern lined with claret silk and edged with cream silk 5cm wide.

Degree of Master

(20) Black poly rayon gown of the Cambridge masters pattern.

(21) Black trencher with black tassel.

(22) Hood of the Cambridge shape fully lined with the relevant award colour specified below, and further edged with white silk 5cm wide.

Degree of Bachelor, Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma

(23) Black poly rayon gown of the Cambridge bachelor pattern.

(24) Black trencher with black tassel.

(25) Hood of the Cambridge pattern faced with 10cm wide silk of the relevant award colour specified below.

Undergraduate Certificate/Diploma/Advanced Diploma/Associate Degree

(26) Black poly-rayon gown of the Cambridge bachelor pattern.

(27) Full-length stole, lined with red.

(28) Black trencher with black tassel.

Certificates I – IV

(29) Black poly-rayon gown of the Cambridge bachelor pattern.

(30) Full-length stole lined with black and centre trimmed with red strip.

(31) Black trencher with black tassel.

Companion of the University

(32) Black poly rayon gown of the Cambridge masters pattern.

(33) Full-length, white stole with a black backing with the Charles Darwin University logo at the base.

Indigenous Graduates

(34) In addition to the academic dress relating to the qualification being conferred; an additional half-length stole with an indigenous motif is to be worn.

Colours

(35) Colours are allocated to groups of awards in cognate areas that form a broad field of study, as follows:

Section 5 - Non-Compliance

(37) Non-compliance with Governance Documents is considered a breach of the Code of Conduct – Staff or the Code of Conduct – Students, as applicable, and is treated seriously by the University. Reports of concerns about non-compliance will be managed in accordance with the applicable disciplinary procedures outlined in the Charles Darwin University and Union Enterprise Agreement 2022 and the Code of Conduct – Students.

(38) Complaints may be raised in accordance with the Complaints and Grievance Policy and Procedure - Employees and Complaints Policy - Students.

(39) All staff members have an individual responsibility to raise any suspicion, allegation or report of fraud or corruption in accordance with the Fraud and Corruption Control Policy and Whistleblower Reporting (Improper Conduct) Procedure.
